When developing the concept for this piece, I was thinking on those ‘sliding door’ moments in life. Those split seconds where things can go one way or another and if you froze them and stared into them, you would have no way of knowing what would be next. I had started a work with a snake wrapped around a woman previously, though it was fairly standard. In revisiting the idea I wanted the impact to hinge on the snake, so the imagery of it about to strike came forward.
This piece flowed so naturally that is was also most effortless. The woman stands with such confidence, she knows the snake is there, like it is part of her yet her back is turned to it’s exposed fangs. When I look at her I’m not sure if she knows what the snake is doing but trusts that she is safe, or if she is over confident and unaware that the snake is about to bite.
I find myself wishing I had her confidence in any of my relationships. To be able to stand tall with understanding and acceptance of all that is happening, regardless of outcome, is a feeling I have never known. I doubt myself, my judgement and my place in relationships constantly, like a timid little mouse instead of a strong, self assured woman.
The title of this piece isn’t about placing trust in the snake at your back. It is about trusting yourself, your choices and your ability to take responsibility of where those choices lead you.
